Why would you spend around $4,000
dollars on Pedders Extreme shocks and suspension when you can get Pedders Sports
Ryder, or a road going Koni or Bilstein set up for about half that?Faster lap times, that's why.
To fully understand how they are better, you need to read some of
the handling
theory on this web site.
Basically, it is adjustability. You must have seperate bump
and rebound adjustments. Extreme has 20 bump, and 4 rebound settings. If you
only have one way adjustment, you are limited to only a fraction of the tuning
possibilities we talk about on this web site. If you have no adjustment, it is a
huge compromise for racing purposes. The shock designer will be only guessing at
what you might need on the race track.
Shocks used to be mainly for wheel control - control the spring
and keep the wheel in contact with the road. Even open wheel racing car drivers
retiring in the early eighties have said "We didn't do that much with the
shocks."
The big go in racing now, is to use shocks for grip and
balance. The shocks take over some of the work previously allocated to springs and
anti-roll bars. Shock tuning is used to improve turn in and power down phases, even
heave, where the car goes light over crests. If you can balance the car on softer
racing springs and bars, grip will be improved.
And with Extreme, you can soften the shocks for the road, to give
you reasonable
ride quality, and increase their life. Shocks working unnecessarily hard on the road
are obviously going to wear out quicker.
Where fitted to a registered car, used on the road, you have a 2
year, 40,OOO km warranty, backed by the No 1 suspension company in the country.
If you buy Extreme from us at Smithees, we can do the workshop
set up for you -
weight scaling, alignment etc., and spend a day with you at Wakefield Park race circuit,
testing, and helping you with your suspension tuning.
